The pitfalls of PPI Print E-mail

Payment Protection Insurance, or “PPI” as it is known, must have one of the dirtiest names in the financial services business, after low-cost endowment policies, for dodgy sales practices and general mis-selling.

Last week the Competition Commission published a report damning the way PPI is sold, and said it is considering banning the sale of policies at the same time that loans and credit cards are taken out by bank customers.

“You’re never alone with a Strand,” went the old cigarette commercial. These days, smokers are almost always alone, as health conscious colleagues move out of the range of their fumes. Since smoking in public places was banned last July they could be breaking the law if they light up in a public building or place of work.

 Since the smoking ban was introduced it has also been illegal to smoke in vehicles that are used to transport members of the public or, if they are used by more than one person for work . This means it is against the law for both drivers and passengers to light up in taxis and private hire vehicles, even if the driver has no passengers.

Be careful where you buy your travel insurance Print E-mail

When the sale of general insurance came under the supervision of the Financial Services Authority in January 2005, anyone buying cover directly from an insurer or via a broker could be confident that the sale had to comply with strict rules and regulations, and there were rights of redress if things went wrong.


However, a loophole was left in the rules: if you bought your insurance from a travel agent, as part of the travel package, the travel agent did not have the same obligations to the customer.
