Halifax is launching a new student account on Monday 4 August and the bank is claiming it's leading the market. Youngsters get upto £3,000 as an interest-free overdraft and the Halifax says there are a range of other useful goodies rather than free CDs or MP3 players. The same deal is being offered by the Bank of Scotland. "Our account offers real long-term value," claimed Mike Regnier, head of banking at Halifax. "By choosing a Halifax Student Account, students with an overdraft could make a real saving. Unlike some other banks we also reward students who use their account in credit - paying them 2% gross interest." Having an account in credit may be a rarity for students but getting 2% on any cash in the account is not to be sniffed at. However, students could easily find a better home for any spare money they have. Rival banks are offering up to just £2,000 to students as an interest-free overdraft, although most start at £1,000 and increase the level over the length of the college years. Other extras offered by the Halifax include: commission-free foreign currency and American Express Travellers Cheques: 25% off AA membership for a year; and 20% discount on card care insurance.
