Disenchanted workers are fleeing Britain in hope of a better job and a better life. In a trend reminiscent of the Auf Wiedersehen, Pet era of the 1980s, when the economy saw an explosion in the number of workers who travelled abroad for a better quality of life, new research has found that that around 2.1 million Britons are planning to get away from a troubled economy and will leave the UK to earn a living overseas in the coming year.
New research from Cater Allen Private Bank has found that one in five Britons have already made money by living and working abroad and that the same number are considering the move over the next 12 months, with men twice as likely to do so as women.
As well as being able to work anywhere within the EU without a visa, the exodus may be helped by the fact that a large number of Britons already have ties abroad, with 20.3 million people (44%) stating that they had friends living and working overseas and 21.7 million (47%) saying that they had family abroad. Indeed, Britain's extended network of family and friends already serves more than just a social function, with 1.8 million people stating that they periodically travelled to meet these people on matters relating to business.
Sally Watts, Marketing Manager at Cater Allen, says: "We have seen a large proportion of people coming into the UK in recent years looking for work opportunities, but in the current market more and more Britons are realising there are also opportunities available to them overseas. For many the next twelve months seems to be an ideal time to escape or try something new abroad." |
