Many UK companies reward their shareholders with discounts when they use their shops, hotels or restaurants, or buy holidays or flights through their operations. However, these deals can be difficult to find out about. This easy-to-use guide is a simple reference tool to provide further information on what perks to expect when investing in shares.

The guide offers an extensive range of perks from dozens of companies, from travel on Eurostar (pictured) to discounts on  beer at Fullers the brewers.

Among those listed are:

  • Aga Foodservice Group offers shareholders with a minimum of 1,000 shares a 10% discount on kitchen appliances and tiles up to a maximum of £500 in any Group shop.
  • Bellway Homes gives shareholders with 2,000 shares a discount of £625 per £25,000 of the purchase price of a new home.
  • Bloomsbury Publishing shareholders with 250 shares get a 35% discount on Harry Potter and other books.
  • British Airways offers a 10% discount when booking online with a minimum of 200 orinary shares.
  • Eurotunnel holders of 1,000 shares, or Groupe Eurotunnel SA holders of 750 shares receive a 30% discount on the standard car fares for three return (or six single) car journeys per year.
  • Fuller, Smith & Turner give shareholders owning more than £100 worth of shares preferential rates on beer, wine and spirits from its Brewery Store and on some Fuller's hotels.
  • Holidaybreak shareholders can enjoy a 10% discount on a range of holiday accommodation with a minimum of 200 shares.
  • Johnson Service Group shareholders with 200 shares receive £50 worth of dry cleaning vouchers - a return on investment of over 10% per annum on the perks alone.
  • Marks & Spencer provides a number of discounts across its product range.
  • Mothercare provides a £50 voucher booklet to those with more than 500 shares.
  • The Restaurant Group offers 25% discounts on meals at a number of restaurant chains, including Garfunkel's.
  • Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway provides unlimited free travel on publicly advertised steam trains to shareholders and others, depending on the number of shares held.
  • Signet gives a 10% discount on all purchases at H.Samuels, Ernest Jones and Leslie Davis shops.

Ian Murrell, Wills & Co's Head Dealer, says, "Many people don't realise the incredible range of perks available from British companies, as they find it both difficult and time consuming to research this information on their own. Although accepted wisdom remains that you should never invest just for the sake of the perks, they can often pay for the cost of the shares in fairly short order!"
