The days when students were undernourished, poor and had a bath once a week are long gone. These days they are a hugely desirable target for advertisers and are unwittingly worth much more than they might  think. Consider the cost of your mobile, ipod, laptop, digital camera, TV, DVD player, games console and various tuxes and ballgowns and suddenly you’re sitting on a goldmine. You would probably be pretty upset if the whole lot was stolen because you left the front door open after a few too many pints of cider - so you need to be insured.

Some universities offer block insurance for those living in halls, but you will probably have to pay extra to cover high-value items. If you are living in rented accommodation you are in a high-risk group for burglary and other theft and need to insure yourself with a specialist provider, such as Endsleigh or www.cover4students.com. You may be covered on your parents’ household policy, which is a cheap way of getting cover, but do remember that if you make a claim it could mean their premiums go up in future years.

Don't forget to flash your NUS Extra card, as it can secure a discount with some insurers.
