British Gas announced today that it is cutting its gas prices by 7% or £55. It has also launched a new online plan which is the cheapest in the market. This, according to the online comparison service uSwitch, means that Britain’s largest supplier is now the cheapest for standard gas, cheapest for standard electricity and cheapest online.
“British Gas is launching a major charm offensive on the household energy market. It is firing on all fronts, offering the cheapest gas, electricity and online plans," said Emma Bush, energy expert at uSwitch.com.
"Online energy plans are consistently the most competitive in the market, but British Gas’s new WebSaver 6, launched today, comes in at £899 a year. Given that the average household energy bill was £912 in January 2008, this plan is offering consumers the chance to take their energy bills back to pre-2008 prices.
“We would urge all households to seriously consider ditching their standard energy plans and move online. Moving to dual fuel, paying by direct debit and signing up to an online plan will cut your bills by around £300.”
